Constraint relationship for reflectional symmetry and rotational symmetry

چکیده
A novel theorem linking reflectional symmetry and rotational symmetry has been established in this paper. This theorem constrains that, for a rotationally symmetric image with K>1 fold(s) (K-RSI), its number of reflection-symmetric axes must be either K or zero. The novel constraint theorem provides the guidance for the procedure of symmetry detection. It has been demonstrated by the experiments included in this paper. © 2001 SPIE and IS&T. A Constraint Relationship for Reflectional Symmetry and Rotational Symmetry
A novel theorem linking reflectional symmetry and rotational symmetry has been established in this paper. This theorem constrains that, for a rotationally symmetric image with K ≥ 1 fold(s) (K-RSI), its number of reflection-symmetric axes must be either K or zero. The novel constraint theorem provides the guidance for the procedure of symmetry detection. It has been demonstrated by the experime...
متن کاملSymmetry Detection by Generalized Complex (GC) Moments: A Close-Form Solution
This paper presents a unified method for detecting both reflection-symmetry and rotation-symmetry of 2D images based on an identical set of features, i.e., the first three nonzero generalized complex (GC) moments. This method is theoretically guaranteed to detect all the axes of symmetries of every 2D image, if more nonzero GC moments are used in the feature set. Furthermore, we establish the r...
متن کاملNegentropic Planar Symmetry Detector
In this paper we observe that information theoretical concepts are valuable tools for extracting information from images and, in particular, information on image symmetries. It is shown that the problem of detecting reflectional and rotational symmetries in a two-dimensional image can be reduced to the problem of detecting point-symmetry and periodicity in one-dimensional negentropy functions. ...
متن کاملSimple Spherical Venn diagrams with Isometry Groups of Order Eight
For each n ≥ 4 we show how to construct simple Venn diagrams of n curves embedded on the sphere with the following sets of isometries: (a) a 4-fold rotational symmetry about the polar axis, together with an additional involutional symmetry about an axis through the equator, and (b) an involutional symmetry about the polar axis together with two reflectional symmetries about orthogonal planes th...
متن کاملFinding rotational symmetries by cyclic string matching
Symmetry is an important shape feature. In this paper, a simple and fast method to detect perfect and distorted rotational symmetries of 2D objects is described. The boundary of a shape is polygonally approximated and represented as a string. Rotational symmetries are found by cyclic string matching between two identical copies of the shape string. The set of minimum cost edit sequences that tr...
